Juegos de estrategia y consecuencias inintencionadas : un modelo con resultados perversos de la crisis de la minería de Cartagena-La Unión*

Este artículo representa una aproximación al conflicto relativo a la continuidad de la actividad minera en la comarca de Cartagena-La Unión, que impulsó, en 1988, a la Sociedad Minera y Metalúrgica de Peñarroya a abandonar el distrito minero después de varias décadas de actividad. En primer lugar, brevemente, se da cuenta de las vicisitudes de la actividad minera a lo largo de la década de 1980, para llegar a estudiar los sucesos críticos del año 1988. En el análisis de estos acontecimientos se emplea una aproximación propia de la teoría de juegos para mostrar cómo fracasaron las negociaciones entre las partes implicadas y cómo del sistema de interacción emergieron consecuencias inintencionadas de signo perverso para algunas de ellas.This paper represents an approximation to the conflict concerning the continuity of mining activity in the area of Cartagena-La Unión, which, in 1988, prompted Sociedad Minera y Metalúrgica de Peñarroya to leave this mine-district after several decades of activity. First of all it briefly accounts for the vicissitudes of mining activity throughout the eighties, coming to the study of the events happened in 1988. In the analysis of these events a game theoretic approach is used, in order to show how the bargaining among the parts broke down and how unintended and perverse outcomes for some of the parts emerged from the system of interaction

Contagio social y homofilia en una red romántica : un análisis de simulación

La lógica de lo social avanzó, hace treinta y cinco años, la actual concepción de los sistemas adaptativos complejos, en los que los agentes actúan siguiendo alguna forma de comportamiento racional, interactúan entre ellos y, como resultado de tales interacciones, producen un efecto inintencionado. El objeto de este trabajo es ilustrar la aproximación de Raymond Boudon a través de un modelo de simulación basado en agentes, donde los agentes representan a adolescentes que intentan mantener relaciones románticas buscando a su pareja entre sus lazos de amistad. La elección de pareja se rige por un principio de homofilia que, en el caso de esta sociedad artificial, se asume que opera de una forma muy sencilla: los agentes buscan a alguien que sea similar a ellos en un cierto rasgo sociocultural. Al mismo tiempo, el valor de ese rasgo para cada agente (que, se asume, puede medirse en una escala cuantitativa) se ve influenciado por los valores de otros agentes en su entorno inmediato. Se muestra cómo estos dos procesos sociales son interdependientes, por lo que producen resultados que están causalmente relacionados.La logique du social anticipated, 35 years ago, the current conception of complex adaptive systems, where agents behave following some kind of rational behavior, interact among themselves and, as a result of those interactions, produce an unintended outcome. The aim of this paper is to illustrate Raymond Boudon's approach by means of an agent based simulation model, where agents represent teenagers who attempt to find a romantic relationship looking for a partner within their friendship ties. Partner choice is ruled by a homophilic principle which is, in the case of this artificial society, assumed to operate in a very simple way: agents look for someone who is similar to them in a given socio-cultural trait. At the same time, the value of this trait (which is assumed to be measured on a quantitative scale) for every agent is influenced by the values of other agents in the immediate environment. It is shown how these two social processes are interdependent, thus producing outcomes which are causally related.La lògica del social va avançar, fa trenta-cinc anys, la concepció actual dels sistemes adaptatius complexos, en què els agents actuen seguint alguna forma de comportament racional, interactuen entre ells i, com a resultat d'aquestes interaccions, produeixen un efecte inintencionat. L'objecte d'aquest treball és il·lustrar l'aproximació de Raymond Boudon a través d'un model de simulació basat en agents, on els agents representen adolescents que intenten mantenir relacions romàntiques buscant la seva parella entre els seus llaços d'amistat. L'elecció de parella es regeix per un principi d'homofília que, en el cas d'aquesta societat artificial, s'assumeix que opera d'una forma molt senzilla: els agents busquen algú que sigui similar a ells en un cert tret sociocultural. Alhora, el valor d'aquest tret per a cada agent (que, s'assumeix, pot mesurar-se en una escala quantitativa) es veu influït pels valors d'altres agents en el seu entorn immediat. Es mostra com aquests dos processos socials són interdependents, per la qual cosa produeixen resultats que estan causalment relacionats

Social contagion and homophily within romantic network

This paper presents an agent based simulation model which attempts to show how the diffusion of a cultural-trait can be affected by an uneven distribution of influence-capacity among individuals. For the sake of concretion the model represents a population of teenagers who attempt to find a romantic relationship looking for a partner within their friendship ties. Partner choice is ruled by a homophilic principle (agents look for someone who is similar to them in a given socio-cultural trait, given a certain range of tolerance to difference). It is shown how the assignment of an especial weight on partner's influence can affect the contagion process, even if the number of romantic relationships represents a small fraction of the total number of links

Non-Conventional Radiotherapy for Total Body Irradiation: Antecedents, Current Research and Perspectives

In addition to the conventional techniques used in radiotherapy, certain procedures, special-called for the treatment of both some cancer diseases and clinical application are usually required. Such practices typically manifest a technical problem with respect to the equipment used, which requires important adjusts that diverge significantly from the standard implemented in the common treatments. Total body irradiation is one of those special techniques, in which the radiation target is the entire patient body. In a broad sense, the concept covers all radiation processes with photon beam fields more wide than standard field size. Treatment with total body irradiation is usually applied with purpose of providing immunosuppression to prevent rejection in bone marrow transplantation procedure. Diseases such as aplastic anemia and a varied number of leukemia and lymphomas respond favorably to this treatment scheme. Beams of megavoltage photons, such as Cobalt sources and linear accelerators, are used for such purposes. In this chapter, the technique will be studied analyzing its definition and first applications. The chapter includes a description of the main treatment schemes on which it is based, covering the calibration process, ergonomic criteria as well as the main contributions in the clinical research field, opportunity fields and novel research perspectives
